Vulnerable Population and Self-Awareness NUR/440 April 29, 2012 The vulnerable population I get to selected is the Native American Indians that live on the Wind River Indian substitute, which is an hour and a half from where I live. The Wind River Reservation is in central Wyoming and is the size of Rhode Island and Delaware combined. The population of the Wind River is slightly 14,000 and is shared by Northern Arapahoe and Eastern Shoshone Tribes. An article submitted by T. William in The New York Times (Feb. 2012) states that the “Wind River has a wickedness rate five to seven times the national add up and a long history of homicides. On average, residents can accept to live 49 years, 20 years fewer than in Iraq. Unemployment is estimated to be highschooler than 80 percent. The reservation’s high school dropout rate of 40 percent is more than doubly the state average. Teenagers and young adults are twice as seeming to kill themselves as their peers elsewhere in Wyoming. Child abuse, jejune pregnancy, sexual assault and domestic violence are endemic, and tipsiness and drug abuse are so common that residents recite positive urinalysis results on drug tests are what embarrass many from working at the state’s favorable oil fields” (pg. A1).



The author for The New York Times goes on to talk about the pee on the reservation, “on wear of the reservation people must boil drinking water because chemicals, possibly the result of the oil and natural gas drill have contaminated the water supply. And fearing that the chemicals might explode in a home, the Environmental Protection Agency ordered residents to running fans and otherwise ensure ventilation while bathing and laundry clothes.” “Some blame Wind River’s geographic closing off and a general apathy on the reservation, while others drive to the numerous troubled children being raised by grandparents unavailing to keep track of them.
