This excerpt takes place beneficial after Hester leaves prison and right before she is going to stand on the scaffold to be publicly shamed for the initial time. In my opinion, this is one of the first significant observations on hu domain nature that Nathaniel Hawthorne presents in The red Letter. Not only does it point out the natural list of people to feel pain as a cock effect rather than all at once, it foreshadows the suffering that Hester and Arthur Dimmesdale forget undergo throughout the course of the novel. It also explains how Hester is able to pull off such terrible things as public shaming without crumbling into herself.
