In our nature, however, there is a provision, alike marvelous and merciful, that the diseased person should never know the intensity of what he endure by his present torture, but chiefly by the pang that rankles afterward it. With almost a serene deportment, therefore, Hester Prynne passed through this portion of her ordeal, and came to a sort of scaffold, at the western extremity of the market-place. It stood nearly downstairs the eaves of Bostons earliest church, and appeared to be a location there.
This excerpt takes place beneficial after Hester leaves prison and right before she is going to stand on the scaffold to be publicly shamed for the initial time. In my opinion, this is one of the first significant observations on hu domain nature that Nathaniel Hawthorne presents in The red Letter. Not only does it point out the natural list of people to feel pain as a cock effect rather than all at once, it foreshadows the suffering that Hester and Arthur Dimmesdale forget undergo throughout the course of the novel. It also explains how Hester is able to pull off such terrible things as public shaming without crumbling into herself.
His use of spoken communication such as torture, rankles and extremity increase the sense of turn in this passage.

This passage was spoken by Hesters husband, newly named Roger Chillingworth, expressing his pity towards Hester.
