Kate OFlaherty was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and later became known as Kate Chopin. Kate was born into a well known, successful family. Her mother, Eliza OFlaherty, was of cut Canadian descent (Wyatt, Neal). Thomas OFlaherty, Kates puzzle, was a native of Ireland. Kate was the third of five children. None of the children lived past the succession of twenty-five, except Kate (Wyatt).
In 1855 Kate was sent to The reverend Heart Academy. The Sacred Heart Academy is a Catholic boarding give instruction for girls, located in St. Louis.
