As young adults develop they are confronted with deciding what values and decisions make up who they are as a person. Finding a personal identity that represents the individual is a long process and the childish will go by dint of many stages. James Marcia developed a guess base on Eriksons work on identity in the 1960s. Marcia refined and extended Eriksons model. Marcia posited that the adolescent stage consists incomplete of identity resolution nor identity confusion, but rather the distributor point to which adept has explored and practiceted to an identity in a categorization of life domains from vocation, religion, relational choices, gender roles, and so on. Marcias theory of identity achievement argues that two distinct parts pattern an adolescents identity: crisis (i. e. a time when ones values and choices are being reevaluated) and commitment. He define a crisis as a time of upheaval where experienced values or choices are being reexamined. The end conclusion of a crisis leads to a commitment made to a trusted role or value. Through this idea Marcia developed quartette stages of identity search.

Identity Diffusion the spatial relation in which the adolescent does not view as a sense of having choices; he or she has not yet made (nor is attempting/willing to make) a commitment
Identity Foreclosure the status in which the adolescent seems willing to commit to some relevant roles, values, or goals for the in store(predicate). Adolescents in this stage have not experienced an identity crisis. They tend to conform to the expectations of others regarding their future (e. g. allowing a parent to determine a career direction) As such, these individuals have not explored a range of options.
Identity Moratorium the status in which the adolescent is currently in a crisis, exploring miscellaneous commitments and is ready to make choices, but has not made a commitment to these choices yet.
