Romeo's Character

ROMEOS CHARACTER Romeos is defined by his attitudes towards love. In a way he is blinded by love, and is inefficient to make thoughtful decisions at key moments in the play. When events go wrong he blames it on fate: Then I defy you stars! In contrast to Juliet, he is very nonparasitic of his parents and we involve little of them, precisely they have obviously back up and loved their son. His friendships with Benvolio and Mercutio are much stronger in the play. Benvolio is a solid, received friend but Mercutio is more daring and dangerous in his friendship. At the very start Romeo is acting the part of a wounded lover. His love for Rosaline is romantic and depends upon being unrequited. He uses accomplished images: From loves weak childish bow she lives / uncharmed. At this stage he does non experience true love, but a love he has read about in books. This changes when he meets Juliet. When he tells her of his feelings they are more believable: My lips, both blushing pilgrims ready stand To smooth that rough intimation with a tender kiss. When Romeo marries Juliet in secret he is consumed by love and he ignores the consequences: Then love-devouring death do what he dare. It blinds him to Tybalts anger towards him and Romeo tries to avoid dealing with it. This in turn causes his friend Mercutio to intervene.



Mercutios death on Romeos behalf is too great a provocation: Fire-eyed vexation be my conduct now. I think that this shows Romeo is non mature enough to see the consequences of his actions. Likewise, hiding at mendicant Lawrences cell afterwards he hears news of his banishment and prepares to kill himself, to sack / the hateful mansion. He doesnt give any thought to his wifes feelings and relies on the Friar to hatch a plan. At the end we see Romeo completely driven by his passion for Juliet.
