In the translation of Sapphos Poem of Jealousy, the protagonist is shown to be in deep love with someone but unable to quite begin close to this figure. This probably means that the charms of this person, the flame, have captured the speakers heart, the vital frame. However the nature of this love that speaker poses is more of idolise as he bow[s] before thine alter(2). As all lovers feel when in loved the speaker also experiences the public opinion of Hope, fear, and joy(7). But soon he will fetch this love first hinted to be more of worship to be unrequited as his faltering tongue attempts in self-conceited(9). The true nature of this love is finally concluded in the fourth stanza when the speaker mourns unheard, sighs unknown, lives unfriended, and dies unpitied.
Along with the content of the poem the coordinate in the translation also reinforces the notion of unrequited love. The measuring rod of the poem is iambic quatrameter and the rhyme scheme is AABBCCDD and on. These two aspects could be compared to a heart overcome, thump and thump. A heart beating which is associated with the enthusiasm and anxiety when one is in love is conveyed through these aspects, reinforcing the love the speaker has. At the end of the poem the live two lines are composed of same sentence structure repeated four times, which emphasizes the feeling that of unrequited love.
