In Owens first stanza he describes a group of soldiers that ar, bent double, similar old beggars under sacks, (line1) that trudge through the mud, knock-kneed, coughing equal hags (line 2). Through these two similes the men are described as old, shriveled and lacking the normal capacities of vigorous, young men who are normally called to war. This irony is akin to the irony in the musical composition of the poem, war is non as glorious as it is seems to be. and as the soldiers are weak when they should be strong, fighting for virtuosos country is said to be virtuous when it should be cautioned against. Sassoon uses the same technique when he describes the soldiers, in foul dug-outs, gnawed by rats (line 9).
Owen uses hyperboles to describe other zombie like conditions by utter the soldiers are, deaf even to the hoots (line 7) of the poison gas shells, that they are, drunk with wear off (line 7) and yet they still manage to march, mindlessly to their, distant serenity (line 4). And Sassoon uses a metaphor to describe the fact that, Soldiers are citizens of deaths grey land, (line1). Both poets use the idea that soldiers are zombies, bent to the will of war and its suppositional glory. Their use of figurative language lends to the feeling of despair and hopelessness the poems project.
Owen also uses a reoccurring theme of drowning as it relates to ignorance or not seeing the truth.
