Helping the street children Essay
Poverty, health and nutrition, and the lack of access to education are the challenges that are linked each other, facing us and become horrible nightmares for the government, and of course children at this time. And nowadays, those nightmares haunt Indonesia, Jakarta ââ¬â the capital city ââ¬â for exact. The challenges are come up by the poverty. Within the poverty, malnutrition and the lack of access to education happened badly. Children, as the innocent parties, also have to feel the impacts. Poor children will become the poverty conservationists. Poor conditions in childhood will only lead to a slower cognitive growth, stunted physical and limited access. Jobs that can be achieved with low education is also very limited. Therefore reduction of poverty might be large and long-term impact when the roots of the problems of poverty such as poor nutrition, education, improved quality of life can be made since the early. No matter how many individual and anecdotal exceptions there may be, the fact remains that the children of the poor simply do not have the same opportunities as the children of non-poor. Whether measured by physical and mental development, health and survival rates, educational achievement or jobs, prospects, incomes or life expectancies, those who spend their childhood in poverty of income and expectation are at a marked and measurable disadvantage. Economic and political conditions often make getting an education ââ¬Ëimpossibleââ¬â¢ for children. Families may require their kids to work so that they have enough money to survive or even sell their children for labor, sex, or adoption because money is too tight. In other cases, obligatory school fees may prove prohibitive. Discrimination, attacks on secular schools, displacement as a result of war or persecution, and other conditions are often to blame. Poverty and prosperity are the two words that opposing each other. Poverty shows the distress and unprivileged situations, while the prosperity shows a luxurious and affluent situations. Traveling Jakarta, everyone can see the luxurious cars like Mercedes-Benz or Hammer along the road, and at the same time, beggars raise their hands, asking for help. The contrast between poor and rich is very pronounced in this very interesting megalopolis. Despite a robust economic growth, Jakarta is still a place of poverty. There is no doubt that the poverty is an intractable problem in Indonesia. Problems associated with poverty is the effect of the poverty for the growth and development of childrenââ¬â¢s lives as they are called to work. In Jakarta, so many school-age children spend most of their time for begging and busking. Most of them started to be beggars and buskers since the age of under five. They were forced to leave the school for work, to provide themselves and help the family economy. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989, has conveyed that there are a number of rights of children should be guaranteed and fulfilled by the state, which every child has the right to be born, to have a name and nationality to have a family who loved and to love, to live in the community safe, peaceful and healthy environment, to get enough healthy food. The deprived of these basic childrenââ¬â¢s rights causing the growth process of the children stunted. One of the emerging social problems in Indonesia, especially in the Jakarta, is the increase of the children as beggars and buskers along the streets, even in the roads. According to the results of a survey of social welfare problems conducted by the Central Bureau of Statistics and Ministry of Social Affairs in 2000, the estimate of the number of the street children is about 50,000 children comprising 83% males and 17% females. According to the same observation, Prasadja and Agustian reported street children in Jakarta aged 13-15 years by 40% and 16-18 years by 30%. From those who had dropped out of school around 60% to 70% do not want to go back to school with a variety of reasons, specifically ashame because already mature, and prefer work to help parents. Meanwhile, the data from the Department of Social in 2005 also shows that more than 1,1 million toddlers are spend most of their times along the roads and the total amount of street children in Jakarta are 3. 3 million. This large population of street children causing of the strength of the street fascination. According to the ChildFund Indonesia, in 2010, these children were taking to the streets only to help their parents. The streets become the easiest locations to looking for work because it requires no capital and skills. The other problem in Jakartaââ¬â¢s many slums is child malnutrition. Most residents of the neighborhoods donââ¬â¢t have kitchens or cooking supplies to prepare their own meals, so they purchase cheap street food that is usually high in fat and sugar, but low in protein and nutrients. As a result of this poor diet, at least 17% of children throughout the city suffer from acute malnutrition, as well as anemia and stunted growth. That percentage is much higher in the slum neighborhoods where poor families are concentrated. The child poverty really needs serious attentions. This country doesnââ¬â¢t have an accurate data of children poverty population. However, if the percentage of the poverty reaches 39% or around 40 millions of the total population, means that the total poor children has a larger amount. The poverty of children exposed in the amount of information street children, dropped out of school, malnutrition, child prostitution, children trafficking and child labor. The possible causes of the child poverty that related to the health and nutrition of the children and the lack of access to education are 1) the low wages, contrary to some stereotypes, 56% of children in poverty have a parent who works full-time, according to Robert Fellmeth, Price Professor of Public Interest Law at the University of San Diego School of Law and executive director of the Childrenââ¬â¢s Advocacy Institute. A full 28% have parents who work part-time and only 16% of parents are unemployed. Generally these parents work in low-wage jobs with few benefits and no room for advancement. Though parents work, the wages are not enough to support their families so children live in poverty 2) single parenthood, is that children living in single-parent families, particularly those headed by women, are much more likely to be poor. On average, women earn less than men, reducing their ability to support a family. Two-parent families also have twice the income potential as single-parent families. This effect can be lessened if the father contributes child support 3) parental education, according to NCCP, children whose parents do not have a high school diploma are more likely to live in poverty. In fact, 83% of children with parents who did not graduate from high school live in poverty. The importance of good policy and initial favorable conditions has been identified as the main factors contributing to poverty reduction during the pre-crisis period in Indonesia. There were four main important policies and programs devised by the new order government (1969-1998). First, the rice policy, which subsequently led to Indonesiaââ¬â¢s attainment of ââ¬Å"rice self-sufficiencyâ⬠in 1984, was one of the important factors that had a lasting impact on alleviating poverty. Second, during the oil boom in 1970s, the government made substantial allocations to the social and human resource development sectors, as well as to transport infrastructure. It was during this period that the government implemented the expansion of primary schools (SD INPRES) and health centers (PUSKESMAS) to ensure wide access to these basic social services for the poor society. Also during this period the government established the INPRES funding system, which allows direct grants from the center to the regions. Third, the government ensured that particular social sectors were protected within the development budget, primarily by utilizing the INPRES mechanism. Fourth, labor intensive projects, which have long been part of the governmentââ¬â¢s efforts to stimulate employment and income during tough economic times. But why does Jakarta still have the Child Poverty problems about the Lack of Access to Education and Health? Not all of those organizations ran properly. Some of them are proceeded improperly. Some of them are troubled with the committees, additional costs, bribery, violence, etc. It is because the government does not look after it. They were just made the organizations, leave it, then entrusted to the committees. Virtually, not all the committees work inappropriately, but some of them are still, and unsettling the poor society. The central government and the regional should run the programs seriously in order to solve the poverty problems and improve the education level and health of street children in Jakarta. The government should send some new teachers to the schools for street children (SD INPRES). Teachers who are not just smart or knowledgeable, but the teachers who have the soul of idealism to help improve the education quality of the street children, not really far to left behind the rich children. The teachers should also required to to attend training first, to treat the street children, who probably are very different than the usual children, in terms of behavior, character, politeness. Yet, it should not be resolved with violence. They should give them a fit attention, because someday they will become the future successors. In addition, the government should establish an organization of art and music for the street children and send some teachers who are experts in the in that parts. Repeatedly, not just anyone. Only selected teachers who can teach them, have a strong soul of idealism about street children, enough patience, to bring the street children become more intense and make a lot of satisfactory artworks and wonderful pieces of musical. The teachers have to take the children down to the competitions, contests, or talent shows to make them enthustiastic for developing their talents. For the health centers (PUSKESMAS), the problems are not very different with SD INPRES, but in additional their big fault is that the PUSKESMAS is just waiting for the patients. Some of the doctors and nurses should visit the poverty society routinely, especially the children. Because, some of them might canââ¬â¢t come to the PUSKESMAS causing the distance, transportation, or strength to keep themselves along the way to the PUSKESMAS. Children and the elderly are the first parties that must be handled after the emergency patients then followed by adults patients. The other solution, is that the government should encourage the society, especially the poverty society, to make some latrines, repair the broken sanitation facilities, provide the mosquito nets and clean water. Also the government should appeal the people to implement the healthy life. For children, country, and the future. The fatal faults of adults, impact to the children. Nowadays, they have to face some big problems that they musnââ¬â¢t face. Innocent faces, should dropped out from school because of costs and fees, do not eat healthy food ââ¬â or even rare to eat ââ¬â because of the lack of money to buy the healthy food, working along the streets under the blazing sun, while the other children sitting on the chairs at school at the same time. Dropped out from school, leaving the dreams. Some of their parents made those faults, made the poverty. The laziness, mischiefs and riots when they were still in youths built a big problem, failure that making bankrupts and end with poverty. Regret comes late, so make it never happen. Parents who are failed in the term economy, ought not be fail at the family harmony and guiding children. Make them become worthy persons in the future, that lead the country becomes better and also decrease the rate of poverty in Indonesia, not only in Jakarta ââ¬â even the world. For the government, they should distribute the agricultural assets, including land, and more access for the poor to better education and health facilities must be given as the first priority in poverty alleviation policies. Sydney Harbour Bridge
Australia is known all over the globe for several reasons. The natural beauties of the country and the wild life are always on the top of the list. But when thinking about Australia there are two super structures that come to mind, The Sydney Opera House and The Sydney Harbour Bridge. In this short report it can be found small history along with a short description about the Sydney Bridge.II. Main Body II. 1 History The first plans to build a bridge actually goes back to year of 1815, but it wasnââ¬â¢t until 1922, after being delayed manly because of the WWI, that the parliament approved the laws for the construction of this massive structure. The actual work didnââ¬â¢t begin until 1924 and took 8 years, a 1400 men work force, and several tragic accidents to finally finish it (Australian Government).The official opening ceremony was on 19 March 1932, were the Premier of New South Wales was supposed to cut the ribbon, but a man in military clothe riding a horse, slash the ribbon before the ceremony began, declaring the bridge opened in the name of the people of Australia. II. 2 Description Also known as the ââ¬Å"Coathangerâ⬠by many residents of the city of Sydney, the Harbour Bridge is, until the date, the worldââ¬â¢s largest, but not longest steel arch bridge.This 53,000 tons structure is located in the Sydney Harbor, uniting the Central Business District (or CBD) at Dawes Point with the commercial and residential areas in the North Shore at Milsons Point (Wikipedia 2010). The bridge is about 500 meters long. Today carries eight traffic lanes, two rail lines, one in each direction, a pedestrian pathway on the eastern side and a cycleway on the western side of the bridge. The arch summit is about 135 meters above the average harbour water level. There are four pylons at each end of the arch that werenââ¬â¢t part of the initial design and they donââ¬â¢t actually fulfil any structural purpose.These structures were added latter on to improve the appearance of the bridge, but now they were all put into use, the most famous being the one located in the south east of the bridge. This particular pylon now holds a three stories museum with the bridge history (Wikipedia 2010). III. Conclusion As can be seen the Sydney Harbour Bridge not only works as a mean to cross the harbour in a more efficient way, but it has become one of the most important landmarks of Australia, thanks to its architecture, beautiful views and tourist attractions.It doesnââ¬â¢t matter if youââ¬â¢ve been there or not, when somebody talks about Sydney, is almost inevitable but to think about this structure. ?IV. Compassion, integrity and courage are some of the virtues that make someone human. Animals do not have a concept of what virtue is, so that makes it solely a human act. You never see animals being courteous to each other, nor do you see them offer assistance to each other. The only animals that come close to showing signs of virtue are pack animals. Although, if an animal in the pack betrays the pack there is no second chances. (dictionary of world philosophy) Consequentialist Approach The Consequentialist determines what is right and wrong with virtue by action. (dictionary of quotations) The one thing that produces the most good will always prevail. This is similar to utilitarianism. I do not agree with this so let me give you an example, if the government wants to take over a dairy farm and it would benefit the community at large, they do. The people that own the dairy farm are unfortunately the victims and also a negligible risk. In my opinion, because the affected group is so small it does not mean they are insignificant. Consequentialist is the wrong way to go. In order to be virtuous all around you must care about everyone and everything. Although the greater good was going to benefit, the farmer does not have to suffer. The government only gives fair market value for the farm and to many people that is okay. I ask you were you the one doing all the work on this farm? Is there a price that you can place on sentiment? In my opinion nothing is more important than family, and if this farm was passed down to me by my father and his father passed it down to him there is no price worth selling for. Because of the Emanate Property law this can be done to anyone at any time without notice. One day the property is yours and the next there is a man standing at the door with a check and a vacancy notice saying you have 5 days to vacate the premises. Non-Consequentialist Theory I do not agree with this approach either; non-consequentialists believe that if something must be done, it must be done no matter what the price. This kind of thinking is destructive; it places irrational thinking into peopleââ¬â¢s minds. If this kind of thinking were allowed at all times there would be complete chaos. For example I will use the massive oil spill of the Gulf of Mexico as an example. Right now we are in a time of great need, our country and many like it are consumed with the thirst for oil. Unfortunately our great thirst is not quenched. We cannot live off of the oil that we drill on land alone. So we justify drilling of shore by saying that we cannot survive without it, and as soon as some kind of oil spill happens all of a sudden there is no one to blame. The people want to blame the company that drilled into the oceans floor, but completely forget the people who voted for the drilling. With non-consequentialism there are no consequences for our actions, no one to tell us that we are doing a great injustice to ourselves and our land. (ethics and morality) The only time that I would ever agree with this type of theory is when there is a child involved. For example if my child was abducted or in and kind of danger I would do everything in my power to get him back into safe and loving arm. The consequences are insignificant at this point. The only thing that matters if that my little boy is safe and sound. If I go to jail for severely hurting someone, so be it. There is a love between a child and a parent that nothing can ever compare to. I love my son so much that I would give an arm for him, and not the expression I would literally give an arm for him. If we allow anything to happen to our children what will we have left? There would be no legacy of the human race; there would neither history of our past nor any joy. Without a doubt, this would be the only way that I would ever agree with the non-consequentialism. Contractarianist Theory This is the theory that I tend to lean towards and it is the one that the book talks about the least if at all. This theory states nothing that causes harm is to be ever implemented. I know that it is a little extreme but it is the one that I like. Child labour in the global economy
Child labour in the global economy This report proposes to examine the key effects, elements and issues surrounding child labour in relation to the global economy. Through their thorough and convincing research, the authors, Eric .V.Edmonds and Nina Pavcnik (2005) estimate the number of economically active children between the ages of 5-14 years and claim that parental poverty is its main cause. However, they are hesitant to endorse the widely held belief that international policies are the solution to this global crisis; rather they suggest more domestic measures to limit it, such as affordable education and more job stimulation. They also argue that contrary to popular perception most working children engage in domestic/market work rather than in manufacturing establishments. Introduction The term Child Labour is a widespread phenomenon often equated to child abuse. In Erics footnote on What is Child Labour? He states the International Labour Organisations (ILO) definition of child labour which is defines an economically active child as a child labourer if she is under 12 and economically active for one or more hours per week, 12-14 and working more than 14hours per week or one or more hours per week in activities that are hazardous by nature or circumstance and if she is 15-17 and works in unconditional work forms of child labour (trafficked children, children in bondage or forced labour, armed conflict, prostitution, pornography, illicit activities)(ILO 2002, cited in Edmonds and Pavcnik 2005; pp.200). Edmonds asserts however that these forms of child labour are rare. He insists stating that children engage in activities which could either be harmful or beneficial depending on the type of activity and also the impact on the child should depend on what the child would be doing if not working (the childs alternative foregone). Household Survey evidence by the ILOs Statistical information and monitoring program on child labour (SIMPOC) also defines child labour as A child is defined as economically active if he or she works for wages (cash or in-kind); works in the family farm in the production and processing of primary products; works in family enterprises that are making primary products for the market, barter or own consumption; or is unemployed and looking for these types of work (ILO 2002,cited in Edmonds and Pavcnik 2005; pp.201). This is a more practical definition taking into account that most children work at home for their families; either on the farm or domestically. The rare hazardous forms of labour stated in the ILOs definition are difficult to make out in household surveys which the SIMPOC are based on thus specialized surveys are conducted by the ILO and other concerned organizations. As a result of these surveys, the ILOs SIMPOC (2002) estimates 8.4 million children engage in unconditional work forms of child labour and of these, 68 percent are in bonded or forced labour (forms of slavery). According to Edmond and Pavncik most child labourers are employed by their parents to work on the farm or domestically which goes against the widely held view that children work mainly in manufacturing establishments and other forms of employment. They argue that children also face risks in the simplest forms of labour as they get older, for example agriculture, due to exposure to toxic chemicals, harsh weather conditions, animals/parasites. Ashagrie (1997) agrees with this point stating that the self reported injury rate from child labour surveys of chi ldren working in agriculture is actually higher at 2 percent than the 9 percent level reported in manufacturing. (Ashagrie 1997 cited in Edmonds and Pavcnik 2005; pp.208) Edmonds and Pavnciks article posits an open research question as to whether the reasons children engage in these hazardous working conditions differs from the driving force of children working on their family businesses or domestic work. Literature review. Child labour in the global economy is estimated at 211million, ILO (2002), which accounts for 18 % of children, aged 5-14 worldwide. Of these, 60 % are in Asia and 23 % in sub Saharan Africa. Although Asia has a greater percentage of child labours Africa has a higher participation rate estimated at 30%. SIMPOC also estimates that 4 % of children work in transition economies (i.e. countries undergoing economic liberalization) and 2% in developed countries. The United Nations childrens educational fund (UNICEF) conducted three surveys in thirty-six less developed countries in 2000 and 2001 providing information on the participation rates in both domestic and market work for 124 million children. The first survey helps buttress Edmond and Pavcniks point on child workers engaging mainly in domestic/ market work rather than manufacturing establishments. From the table above it is evident that less than 3% of children work outside the household for pay and this is mainly the case in rural settlements rather than urban where manufacturing activities are dominant. Approximately 6% participate in unpaid work. Edmonds and Pavcnik interpret these unpaid children as those children who help their neighbours in the farm or business or could also be children receiving in-kind payments (food) as well as children who are indebted to their employees by their parents. However in contrast to this, 20.8% of children work in family businesses and of this figure, 26.2% are in rural areas and 14.8% in urban. The authors further research shows that there is an agreement with this UNICEF survey from other available data from countries like Nepal, South Africa, Vietnam, India as well as Bangladesh where child labour in its garment industry also had a figure of 1.2% unpaid children age 5-14 as cited in a 2002 child labour survey. According to the table ap proximately 65% of children work domestically and 68% work in both market and domestic work. There is a high participation rate pattern by older female children age 10-14 in rural areas. The table also shows that they tend to work longer hours than males. This is probably due to cultural domestic values. Agriculture takes the largest part of the employment sector in countries (e.g. Kenya 77% In 1998, Guatemala 63 %in 2000, Ethiopia 89% in 2001 etc) followed closely by domestic work and then manufacturing which is only a percentage of economically active children. Figures from the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) 2004 (FOA 2004 cited in Edmonds and Pavcnik 2005)match with this indicating that most adults work in agriculture and since most children work with their parents they also work in agriculture. There is a trade off between work and school for child labourers. Most working children attend school and the UNICEF estimates in its second survey the total hours of work in relation to different types of work as well as school attendance. The data shows that on average, children spend 26 hours on market work weekly. Children that work for their families and are unpaid spend 27hours weekly. Paid employment takes up more hours in a week and by older children. Children that take part in domestic work spend 16 hours per week .Edmonds and Pavcnik further stated that these figures should not imply that domestic work is insignificant because on average, majority of the hours spent on market work is indeed domestic work. However children that attend school spend less hours working than those who do not attend school. The third survey below by the UNICEF reports the school attendance of children aged 5-14. From the table we observe that approximately 70% of children in that age range attend school and this attendance is mainly in favour of older male boys, in urban areas. School attendance conditional on work status accounts for 74%. There is a 14% likelihood that children who do not work do not attend school but this is reflected mainly in younger children. Less than 5 % of the 30% of children that do not attend school work in market work only and we see that domestic work is more popular in this case as 32% of the 30% participate in it alone. Thus Edmonds states that in ignoring this figure of domestic work researchers would lose out on one of the segments of children not attending school. Orazem and Gunnarsson (2004) find that third and fourth graders who attend school but never work in market or domestic work perform 28 % better on mathematics tests and 19% better on language tests than children who attend school and work. Empirical evidence of this is given in an example by Beegle, Dehejia and Gatti (2004) wherein after five years of working and schooling they examined the status of young adults in Vietnam. They observed that a one standard deviation increase in the hours worked by children attending school is equated to a 35% decrease in educational attainment. Edmonds and Pavcnik however are of the school of thought that this negative correlation between working and grade advancement might reflect that low performing students engage in work rather than that work generates low-performing stude nts. Parents send their children to work not by choice but as a result of economic necessity thus Child labour is caused fundamentally by poverty and as far back as data show, there have been several policies proposed with the aim of fighting against child labour worldwide. Have these legislative acts helped solve the problem of child labour? To answer this question Edmonds and Pavncik give two examples, firstly the US Congress enacted laws prohibiting the importation of goods made by children and as a result of these sanctions, Bangladesh was said to have released over 10,000 paid child workers below the age of 14 from its garment industry in the mid 1900s. Evidently this is not drastic as the figures are a tenth of the percentage of child workers in Bangladesh. Furthermore Moehling (1999) finds little evidence that minimum wage laws in manufacturing sectors put into practice between the years 1880 and 1910 contributed to the decline in child labour during this period. In addition, the a uthors state that more recent studies show that the US House of Representatives have discussed the Child labour elimination act which would enforce punitive measures, alter financial support, and order US oppositions from multilateral development banks to 62 developing countries affected by child labour. Edmonds and Pavcnik argue that although these policies might help reduce child labour, they are not guaranteed to be successful in less developed nations where they are targeted at for these reasons enumerated in their article: Lack of available resources to implement policies (i.e. bans) mainly in cases where the children engage in market work for their parents wherein the end product contributes to the family income. Child labour policies are seen as a case of multiple equilibrium, Basu and Van (1998), whereby children that work at low wages are at one equilibrium and increased adult wages when children do not work are at another therefore defeating the purpose of the ban. Moreover according to Basus example (2003), if firms are fined for child labour, the cost of the fine increases the demand for cheap child labour as opposed to high earning adult workers in order to make more profit to offset the fine which in turn makes child labour necessary. Children that are prohibited from working legitimately might move into more hazardous forms of child labour or non exporting sectors of the economy such as prostitution however there is no scientific evidence of this. Since Poverty is the main cause of child labor it would be logical to combat child labor by A) Improving the standard of living of families i.e. increasing adult income which in turn does the following Diminishes the marginal utility of income which decreases the value of marginal contribution because as more income comes into the family form parents it eliminates the satisfaction derived from the income contribution of the child. Brings about the purchase of alternatives used in place of child labour (e.g. washing machines) Increases a childs productive level in schooling (human capital) because the family is now able to afford necessary materials (e.g. textbooks) B) Encouraging credit markets to give loans to poor households is another suggestive method because child labor has been said to be a result of credit market imperfections. Baland and Robinson 2000; Ranjan, 2001 agree with this stating Several theoretical studies emphasize that if credit markets allowed households to borrow against future earnings child labor could be much reduced C) Providing affordable education because parents would be willing to contribute to improve their childrens long run chances yet, are however left with no choice but to send their children to work due to the perceived returns to schooling. Policies have been adopted to reduce chid labour through educational subsidies. An example of such is the Progresa program in Mexico which is predominately used in many countries worldwide. It gives parents an incentive to keep their child in school. Parents are paid if the school certifies that the child has been attending school regularly. Thus it is a demand approach aimed at reducing the cost of schooling, which varies with age of the child, and increasing family income. Conclusively relying on laws and their enforcement as discussed previously, is a necessary but unsatisfactory solution to child labour. Overall, economic development interventions relevant to the underlying cause are more effective policy tools to reduce the incidence of child labour.

Clinical psychology aims to reduce psychological distress and to enhance and promote psychological well-being by the systematic application of knowledge derived from psychological theory and dataââ¬â¢ (British Psychological Society Division of Clinical Psychology, 2001). To this end clinical psychology has distinguished itself from other helping professions by an enduring reliance on its foundation of scientific research. Within scientific research there is always a strong debate between those that prefer quantitative methods and those who prefer qualitative ones. proponents of quantitative methods have built the standards in experimental research and in researches performed on a large number of subjects and which use sampling criteria and statistical analysis techniques. On the other side, the qualitative method uses procedures of qualitative nature both at the level of collecting the data as well as the level of analyzing them (Tagliapietra, Trifan, Raineri & Lis, 2009). The gathering data procedures include: interviews, group discussions, observations, journals; while the analysis procedures include coding, categorizations and systematic confrontation between the categories and their dimensions. Such research is often defined as an explorative one, opposite to ââ¬Å"classicalâ⬠scientific research aiming to confirm / disconfirm initial hypothesis. Among the qualitative methods used in the sci entific research we can list: Focus Group, Speech Analysis, Conversation Analysis, Grounded Theory and Phenomenological Interpretative Analysis (Tagliapietra, Trifan, Raineri & Lis, 2009). This tension between an emphasis on a positivist science base and an emphasis on therapy and professional issues runs through many debates in clinical psy... ...s to use, qualitative methods in drug evaluation can increase the likelihood of discovering new kinds of information about the experiences of patients and those who care for them. In summary, quantitative research method as a research tool has an several contribution in the field of clinical psychology. Opportunities are unlimited in rehabilitation to describe and interpret phenomena via qualitative study. The qualitative research method is needed in addition to or concurrently with the quantitative perspective in improving the practices of clinical psychology. Using qualitative methods in clinical practices has several advantages compared to the quantitative methods. Moreover qualitative method as a research tool has been proven by different researchers that it contributes in development of new theories and new treatment approaches in clinical psychology.

Role Model: Bill Cosby
Role Model Review: Bill Cosby My observation is based on the biography of Dr. Bill Cosby. Cosby has been a great example of what a father and leader in the community is all about with regards to the Christian worldview. Even in his hay days, in the mid-60ââ¬â¢s, as a standup comic he was regarded as a PG comic because his material was clean of profanity and focused more on his personal life and experiences as a father. In 1965 he released comic albums that garnered him six Grammy Awards. His work was highly respected and he eventually ended up on television, becoming a successful actor as well. Knowing the importance of education, the former high school dropout/ G. E. D. recipient, returned to school after serving in the US Navy and obtained a degree from Temple University. He later earned a Masters/ PhD. in Education from the University of Massachusetts. Wanting to bring the focus of children and education to television, Dr. Cosby became involved with the PBS series ââ¬Å"The Electric Companyâ⬠and created the cartoon series ââ¬Å"Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids. â⬠Both shows focused on the value of education for children and young adults. He produced and starred in one of the most popular and successful television sitcoms in the 1980ââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Cosby Show. â⬠It was the first television show to portray an upper middle class African American family. ââ¬Å"The Cosby show drew audiences with its warm humor and believable (family) situations. Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable became one of the most popular dads in television history. He also served as a parental figure to his young co-stars on set. â⬠(ââ¬Å"Bill Cosby biography,â⬠2011). An advocate for education, Bill continues to support universities, donating to Spellman College, in Atlanta, and huge amounts of money to various charities across the U. S. He continues to teach kids through television with the childrenââ¬â¢s cartoon series ââ¬Å"Little Bill. â⬠Dr. Cosby is passionate about creating positive family values in America. ââ¬Å"In 2004 Cosby roiled the racial waters when he blasted the pathology of Black families at an NAACP dinner in Washington, D. C. The iconic comedian stunned the nation with a bitter diatribe against low-income African-American families. Come on People, 2007, (a book discussing his outburst in 2004) has replaced Cosbyââ¬â¢s vitriolic speechifying with firm but loving essays that urge Blacks to eschew their pathological embrace of victimization and despair. (Washington, Laura, 2007). Cosbyââ¬â¢s view on ethics, family value, knowledge and reality express that he supports a Christian Worldview. My family watched ââ¬Å"The Cosby Showâ⬠and although it was entertaining, it also taught family values and how to handle conflict and disagreement between siblings and parents. While relig ion wasnââ¬â¢t stressed on the show, the family often attended church services and spoke of family traditions, ethics and right versus wrong according to Christian views. ââ¬Å"I have no problem with Jesus or God. I have a problem with people sitting there and saying that Jesus and God will find the way. I have a problem with Christian men who wonââ¬â¢t dress up and go down and confront the drug dealers. â⬠(Schwartzman, Paul, 2006). Motifs of Invisible Man Essay
Throughout Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison the narrator battles many battles continuously. These motifs that all compile into the very many themes of the literary work. The motifs range from blindness to invisibility even to the racism keeping our narrator from discovering his true identity. Blindness is the most used motif in Invisible Man. The narrator and his peers are always battling blindness throughout the novel. Throughout the novel blindness is a problem because willfully avoid seeing and confronting the true problem. â⬠Within the American conscience with such an intensity towards his predicamentâ⬠(Forward Page 2). During the time period the moral blindness of whites was a major problem, but so was the blindness of blacks. Many of the brothers remained blind to the true problem they were confronting. Also blindness takes a few literal turns. One during the ââ¬Å"Battle Royalâ⬠, when the boys fight blindfolded, and the second the statue of the founder is described as ââ¬Å"not having eyesâ⬠. Blindness also literally suffers from blindness. The motif, blindness, tells us about the actions and feeling of the society. The second major motif is invisibility. Not only is it in the title, but this topic plays major role throughout the novel. The book starts out with the narrator saying ââ¬Å"I am an Invisible Manâ⬠(page 3). This motif continues to appear all the time until the epilogue. The motif of invisibility goes hand in hand with moral blindness. While blindness has a bad connotation, Invisibility can bring freedom and mobility. â⬠Iââ¬â¢ve overstayed my hibernation, since thereââ¬â¢s a possibility that even an invisible man has a socially responsible role to playâ⬠(Page 571). The narrator realizes that being invisible may be a safe position, but he would never be able to make a major impact in the world. Although he is comfortable as an invisible man he emerges to go make a visible impact on the world. The last major motif, Racism, is an obstacle to finding individual identity. Throughout the novel he struggles to find his true identity. As he passes from minor society to minor society he tries to adapt their identity on to him. Each time he takes away from his individuality. The narrator finally realizes that racism just causes him to see what others want him to see. He comes to this realization when he says ââ¬Å"and I knew it was better to live out f oneââ¬â¢s own absurdity than to die for that of others, whether for Rasââ¬â¢s or Jackââ¬â¢sâ⬠(page 559). In the end he chooses to be productive by making his own contributions to society; force others to acknowledge, and to clarify the reality of thoughts outside of their prejudiced notions. The narrator battles blindness of others, the comfort of invisibility, and the obstacle blocking his own personal identity. Throughout this coming of age novel the narrator losses many battles, but in the end he finally wins. He ends as a visible advocate staying true to himself.

Linking Verbs
Who could forget the time when one needed a person to serve as a ââ¬Å"bridgeâ⬠to another person or to something? Also, people have relatives and they are connected by their immediate family members to these relatives. For example, a person is related or ââ¬Å"linkedâ⬠to his/her grandfather through his/her mother or father. Thus, the link is the parent for this instance. The same is true with verbs for there are the so-called ââ¬Å"linking verbs.â⬠These linking verbs are considered to be the part of the sentence or phrase which ââ¬Å"implies state of being or condition for the subject, [and] not actionâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Linking Verbsâ⬠). To put it more clearly, the linking verb is included in a sentence to connect two different parts of the sentence. In addition to this, the linking verb tries to connect the subject to the parts of the sentence to which it is related (ââ¬Å"Action Verbs and Linking Verbsâ⬠). In our previous example of relatives and families, an analogy may be made between the parents and the linking verbs for the two seek to connect two different things or persons. Examples of linking verbs include ââ¬Å"am, is, are, was, were, has been, are being, might have, been, etcâ⬠which are forms of the verb ââ¬Å"be,â⬠ââ¬Å"become,â⬠and ââ¬Å"seemâ⬠and all of these are considered to be always linking verbs in their sense (ââ¬Å"The Linking Verbâ⬠). It is easy to identify the linking verbs for without these, there would be lesser thought to the sentence if none at all. Taking this statement as an example, ââ¬Å"The blue sky is my source of inspiration in finishing my paintingâ⬠would show that ââ¬âis serves as the linking verb. It links the blue sky to the phrase ââ¬Å"source of inspiration.â⬠When one is given such sentence, it would be very easy to discern that it is the blue sky is the source of inspiration because of the inking verb. Imagine deleting the linking verb for the statement. It might give a general and vague idea that may be understood by some but can not entirely be discerned. The linking verb may be used for three instances, which is to link the subject with a noun, a pronoun, or an adjective (ââ¬Å"Linking Verbsâ⬠). An example of a linking verb that connects the subject with a noun is ââ¬Å"Ana is a queen of her own dreams.â⬠Could you identify the subject and the noun? Indeed, Ana is the subject and the word queen is the noun to which the subject, Ana, is connected. Going to the next, which is connecting the subject to a pronoun, a statement that could be used as an example would be ââ¬Å"The big mansion down the road is his.â⬠In that statement, the big mansion is connected to the pronoun ââ¬Å"hisâ⬠and this shows that the big mansion is owned by the man referred to in the statement. Lastly, the linking verb is used to connect the subject to the adjective which it is related to. For example, ââ¬Å"The steps she made towards the aisle were as graceful as ever.â⬠The subject here is the word ââ¬Å"stepsâ⬠and the linking verb is ââ¬Å"wereâ⬠and this is connected to the adjective ââ¬Å"graceful.â⬠Aside from discussing the purpose of the linking verb, it is also important to take note of when the action occurred to be able to place the correct linking verb. Linking verbs are important in constructing sentences with thought. In one whole page of words, it could be seen that linking verbs play an important role in weaving the ideas together and to show the relationships between the two. The Lost Duke of Wyndham Chapter Six
Jack had always prided himself on being able to spot the irony in any situation, but as he stood in the Belgrave drawing room ââ¬â correction, one of the Belgrave drawing rooms, surely there were dozens ââ¬â he could find nothing but stark, cold reality. He'd spent six years as an officer in His Majesty's army, and if he'd learned one thing from his years on the battlefield, it was that life could, and frequently did, turn on a single moment. One wrong turn, one missed clue, and he could lose an entire company of men. But once he returned to Britain, he'd somehow lost sight of that. His life was a series of small decisions and insignificant encounters. It was true that he was living a life of crime, which meant he was always dancing a few steps ahead of the hangman's noose, but it wasn't the same. No one's life depended upon his actions. No one's livelihood, even. There was nothing serious about robbing coaches. It was a game, really, played by men with too much education and too little direction. Who would have thought that one of his insignificant decisions ââ¬â to take the Lincoln road north instead of south ââ¬â would lead to this? Because one thing was for certain, his carefree life on the road was over. He suspected that Wyndham would be more than happy to watch him ride away without a word, but the dowager would not be so accommodating. Miss Eversleigh's assurances aside, he was quite certain the old bat would go to extensive lengths to keep him on a leash. Maybe she would not turn him over to the authorities, but she could certainly tell the world that her long-lost grandson was gadding about the countryside robbing coaches. Which would make it damned difficult to continue in his chosen profession. And if he was truly the Duke of Wyndhamâ⬠¦ God help them all. He was beginning to hope that his aunt had lied. Because no one wanted him in a position of such authority, least of all himself. ââ¬Å"Could someone please explainâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He took a breath and stopped, pressing his fingers against his temples. It felt as if an entire battalion had marched across his forehead. ââ¬Å"Could someone explain the family tree?â⬠Because shouldn't someone have known if his father had been the heir to a dukedom? His aunt? His mother? Himself? ââ¬Å"I had three sons,â⬠the dowager said crisply. ââ¬Å"Charles was the eldest; John, the middle; and Reginald the last. Your father left for Ireland just after Reginald marriedâ⬠ââ¬â her face took on a visible expression of distaste, and she jerked her head toward Wyndham ââ¬â ââ¬Å"his mother.â⬠ââ¬Å"She was a Cit,â⬠Wyndham said, with no expression whatsoever. ââ¬Å"Her father owned factories. Piles and piles of them.â⬠One of his brows lifted. Very slightly. ââ¬Å"We own them now.â⬠The dowager's lips tightened, but she did not acknowledge his interruption. ââ¬Å"We were notified of your father's death in July of 1790.â⬠Jack nodded tightly. He had been told the same. ââ¬Å"One year after that, my husband and my eldest son died of a fever. I did not contract the ailment. My youngest son was no longer living at Belgrave, so he, too, was spared. Charles had not yet married, and we believed John to have died without issue. Thus Reginald became duke.â⬠She paused, but other than that expressed no emotion. ââ¬Å"It was not expected.â⬠Everyone looked at Wyndham. He said nothing, ââ¬Å"I will remain,â⬠Jack said quietly, because he didn't see as he had any other choice. And maybe it wouldn't hurt to learn a thing or two of his father. A man ought to know where he comes from. That was what his uncle had always said. Jack was beginning to wonder if he'd been offering forgiveness ââ¬â in advance. Just in case he decided one day that he wished to be a Cavendish. Of course, Uncle William hadn't met these Cavendishes. If he had, he might've revised that statement entirely. ââ¬Å"Most judicious of you,â⬠the dowager said, clapping her hands together. ââ¬Å"Now then, we ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"But first,â⬠Jack cut in, ââ¬Å"I must return to the inn to collect my belongings.â⬠He glanced around the drawing room, almost laughing at the opulence. ââ¬Å"Meager though they are.â⬠ââ¬Å"Nonsense,â⬠the dowager said briskly. ââ¬Å"Your things will be replaced.â⬠She looked down her nose at his traveling costume. ââ¬Å"With items of far greater quality, I might add.â⬠ââ¬Å"I wasn't asking your permission,â⬠Jack said lightly. He did not like to allow his anger to reveal itself in his voice. It did put a man at a disadvantage. ââ¬Å"Nonethe ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Furthermore,â⬠Jack added, because really, he didn't wish to hear her voice any more than he had to, ââ¬Å"I must make explanations to my associates.â⬠At that he looked over at Wyndham. ââ¬Å"Nothing approaching the truth,â⬠he added dryly, lest the duke assume that he intended to spread rumors throughout the county. ââ¬Å"Don't disappear,â⬠the dowager directed. ââ¬Å"I assure you, you will regret it.â⬠ââ¬Å"There's no worry of that,â⬠Wyndham said blandly. ââ¬Å"Who would disappear with the promise of a dukedom?â⬠Jack's jaw tightened, but he forced himself to let it pass. The afternoon did not need another fistfight. And then ââ¬â bloody hell ââ¬â the duke abruptly added, ââ¬Å"I will accompany you.â⬠Oh, good God. That was the last thing he needed. Jack swung around to face him, lifting one dubious brow. ââ¬Å"Need I worry for my safety?â⬠Wyndham stiffened visibly, and Jack, who had been trained to notice even the smallest of details, saw that both of his fists clenched at his sides. So he'd insulted the duke. At this point, and considering the bruises he was likely to find staining his throat, he didn't care. He turned to Miss Eversleigh, offering her his most self-effacing smile. ââ¬Å"I am a threat to his very identity. Surely any reasonable man would question his safety.â⬠ââ¬Å"No, you're wrong!â⬠she cried out. ââ¬Å"You misjudge him. The duke ââ¬â ââ¬Å" She shot a horrified look at Wyndham, and they all were forced to share her discomfort when she realized what she'd said. But she plowed on, determined girl that she was. ââ¬Å"He is as honorable a man as I have ever met,â⬠she continued, her voice low and fervent. ââ¬Å"You would never come to harm in his company.â⬠Her cheeks had flushed with passion, and Jack was struck by the most acidic thought. Was there something between Miss Eversleigh and the duke? They resided in the same house, or castle, as it were, with only an embittered old lady for company. And while the dowager was anything but senile, Jack could not imagine that there was any lack of opportunity to engage in a dalliance under her nose. He watched Miss Eversleigh closely, his eyes falling to her lips. He'd surprised himself when he kissed her the night before. He hadn't meant to, and he certainly had never done such a thing before whilst attempting to rob a coach. It had seemed the most natural thing in the world ââ¬â to touch her chin, tilt her face up toward his, and brush his lips against hers. It had been soft, and fleeting, and it had taken him until this moment to realize just how deeply he wanted more. He looked at Wyndham, and his jealousy must have shown on his face because his newly discovered cousin looked coolly amused as he said, ââ¬Å"I assure you, whatever violent urges I possess, I shall not act upon them.â⬠ââ¬Å"That is a terrible thing to say,â⬠Miss Eversleigh responded. ââ¬Å"But honest,â⬠Jack acknowledged with a nod. He did not like this man, this duke who had been brought up to view the world as his private domain. But he appreciated honesty, no matter the source. And as Jack looked him in the eye, there seemed to develop an unspoken agreement. They did not have to be friends. They did not even have to be friendly. But they would be honest. Which suited Jack just fine. By Grace's calculations, the men ought to have returned within ninety minutes, two hours at most. She had not spent much time in a saddle, so she was not the best judge of speed, but she was fairly certain that two men on horseback could reach the posting inn in something less than an hour. Then Mr. Audley would need to retrieve his belongings, which could not take very long, could it? And then ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Get away from the window,â⬠the dowager snapped. Grace's lips tightened with irritation, but she managed to return her expression to one of placidity before she turned around. ââ¬Å"Make yourself useful,â⬠the dowager said. Grace glanced this way and that, trying to decode the dowager's order. She always had something specific in mind, and Grace hated it when she was forced to guess. ââ¬Å"Would you like me to read to you?â⬠she asked. It was the most pleasant of her duties; they were currently reading Pride and Prejudice, which Grace was enjoying immensely, and the dowager was pretending not to like at all. The dowager grunted. It was a no grunt. Grace was fluent in this method of communication. She took no particular pride in this skill. ââ¬Å"I could pen a letter,â⬠she suggested. ââ¬Å"Weren't you planning to respond to the recent missive from your sister?â⬠ââ¬Å"I can write my own letters,â⬠the dowager said sharply, even though they both knew her spelling was atrocious. Grace always ended up rewriting all of her correspondence before it was posted. Grace took a deep breath and then let it out slowly, the exhale shuddering through her. She did not have the energy to untangle the inner workings of the dowager's mind. Not today. ââ¬Å"I'm hot,â⬠the dowager announced. Grace did not respond. She was hoping none was necessary. And then the dowager picked something up off a nearby table. A fan, Grace realized with dismay, just as the dowager snapped it open. Oh, please, no. Not now. The dowager regarded the fan, a rather festive blue one, with Chinese paintings in black and gold. Then she snapped it back shut, clearly just to make it easier for her to hold it before her like a baton. ââ¬Å"You may make me more comfortable,â⬠she said. Grace paused. It was only for a moment, probably not even a full second, but it was her only means of rebellion. She could not say no, and she could not even allow her distaste to show in her expression. But she could pause. She could hold her body still for just enough time to make the dowager wonder. And then, of course, she stepped forward. ââ¬Å"I find the air quite pleasant,â⬠she said once she had assumed her position at the dowager's side. ââ¬Å"That is because you are pushing it about with the fan.â⬠Grace looked down at her employer's pinched face. Some of the lines were due to age, but not the ones near her mouth, pulling her lips into a perpetual frown. What had happened to this woman to make her so bitter? Had it been the deaths of her children? The loss of her youth? Or had she simply been born with a sour disposition? ââ¬Å"What do you think of my new grandson?â⬠the dowager asked abruptly. Grace froze, then quickly regained her composure and resumed fanning. ââ¬Å"I do not know him well enough to form an opinion,â⬠she answered carefully. The dowager continued to look straight ahead as she answered, ââ¬Å"Nonsense. All of the best opinions are formed in an instant. You know that very well. ââ¬ËElse you'd be married to that repulsive little cousin of yours, wouldn't you?â⬠Grace thought of Miles, ensconced in her old home. She had to admit, every now and then the dowager got things exactly right. ââ¬Å"Surely you have something to say, Miss Eversleigh.â⬠The fan rose and fell three times before Grace decided upon, ââ¬Å"He seems to have a buoyant sense of humor.â⬠ââ¬Å"Buoyant.â⬠The dowager repeated the word, her voice curious, as if she were testing it out on her tongue. ââ¬Å"An apt adjective. I should not have thought of it, but it is fitting.â⬠It was about as close to a compliment as the dowager ever got. ââ¬Å"He is rather like his father,â⬠the dowager continued. Grace moved the fan from one hand to the other, murmuring, ââ¬Å"Is he?â⬠ââ¬Å"Indeed. Although if his father had been a bit moreâ⬠¦ buoyant, we'd not be in this mess, would we?â⬠Grace choked on air. ââ¬Å"I'm so sorry, ma'am. I should have chosen my words more carefully.â⬠The dowager did not bother to acknowledge the apology. ââ¬Å"His levity is much like his father. My John was never one to allow a serious moment to pass him by. He had the most cutting wit.â⬠ââ¬Å"I would not say that Mr. Audley is cutting,â⬠Grace said. His humor was far too sly. ââ¬Å"His name is not Mr. Audley, and of course he is,â⬠the dowager said sharply. ââ¬Å"You're too besotted to see it.â⬠ââ¬Å"I am not besotted,â⬠Grace protested. ââ¬Å"Of course you are. Any girl would be. He is most handsome. Pity about the eyes, though.â⬠ââ¬Å"What I am,â⬠Grace said, resisting the urge to point out that there was nothing wrong with green eyes, ââ¬Å"is overset. It has been a most exhausting day. And night,â⬠she added after a thought. The dowager shrugged. ââ¬Å"My son's wit was legendary,â⬠she said, setting the conversation back to where she wished it. ââ¬Å"You wouldn't have thought it cutting, either, but that was simply because he was far too clever. It is a brilliant man who can make insult without the recipient even realizing.â⬠Grace thought that rather sad. ââ¬Å"What is the point, then?â⬠ââ¬Å"The point?â⬠The dowager blinked several times in rapid succession. ââ¬Å"Of what?â⬠ââ¬Å"Of insulting someone.â⬠Grace shifted the fan again, then shook out her free hand; her fingers were cramped from clutching the handle. ââ¬Å"Or I should say,â⬠she amended, since she was quite sure the dowager could find many good reasons to cut someone down, ââ¬Å"of insulting someone with intention of their not noticing it?â⬠The dowager still did not look at her, but Grace could see that she rolled her eyes. ââ¬Å"It is a source of pride, Miss Eversleigh. I wouldn't expect you to understand.â⬠ââ¬Å"No,â⬠Grace said softly. ââ¬Å"I wouldn't.â⬠ââ¬Å"You don't know what it means to excel at something.â⬠The dowager pursed her lips and stretched her neck slightly from side to side. ââ¬Å"You couldn't know.â⬠Which had to be as cutting an insult as any, except that the dowager seemed completely unaware she'd done it. There was irony in there somewhere. There had to be. ââ¬Å"We live in interesting times, Miss Eversleigh,â⬠the dowager commented. Grace nodded silently, turning her head to the side so that the dowager, should she ever choose to turn her head in her direction, would not see the tears in her eyes. Her parents had lacked the funds to travel, but theirs had been wandering hearts, and the Eversleigh home had been filled with maps and books about faraway places. Like it was yesterday, Grace remembered the time they had all been sitting in front of the fire, engrossed in their own reading, and her father looked up from his book and exclaimed, ââ¬Å"Isn't this marvelous? In China, if you wish to insult someone, you say, ââ¬ËMay you live in interesting times.'â⬠Grace suddenly did not know if the tears in her eyes were of sorrow or mirth. ââ¬Å"That is enough, Miss Eversleigh,â⬠the dowager said suddenly. ââ¬Å"I am quite cooled.â⬠Grace shut the fan, then decided to set it down on the table by the window so she would have a reason to cross the room. Dusk hung only lightly in the air, so it was not difficult to see down the drive. She was not certain why she was so eager to have the two men back ââ¬â possibly just as proof that they had not killed each other on the trip. Despite defending Thomas's sense of honor, she had not liked the look in his eyes. And she had certainly never known him to attack someone. He'd looked positively feral when he lunged for Mr. Audley. If Mr. Audley had been less of a fighting man himself, she was quite certain Thomas would have done him permanent harm. ââ¬Å"Do you think it will rain, Miss Eversleigh?â⬠Grace turned. ââ¬Å"No.â⬠ââ¬Å"The wind is picking up.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes.â⬠Grace waited until the dowager turned her attention to a trinket on the table next to her, and then she turned back to the window. Of course the moment she did, she heard ââ¬â ââ¬Å"I hope it rains.â⬠She held still. And then she turned. ââ¬Å"I beg your pardon?â⬠ââ¬Å"I hope it rains.â⬠The dowager said it again, so very matter-of-fact, as if anyone would wish for precipitation while two gentlemen were out on horseback. ââ¬Å"They will be drenched,â⬠Grace pointed out. ââ¬Å"They will be forced to take each other's measure. Which they will have to do sooner or later. Besides, my John never minded riding in the rain. In fact, he rather enjoyed it.â⬠ââ¬Å"That does not mean that Mr. ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Cavendish,â⬠the dowager inserted. Grace swallowed. It helped her catch her patience. ââ¬Å"Whatever he wishes to be called, I don't think we may assume that he enjoys riding in the rain just because his father did. Most people do not.â⬠The dowager did not seem to wish to consider this. But she acknowledged the statement with, ââ¬Å"I know nothing of the mother, that is true. She could be responsible for any number of adulterations.â⬠ââ¬Å"Would you care for tea, ma'am?â⬠Grace asked. ââ¬Å"I could ring for it.â⬠ââ¬Å"What do we know of her, after all? Almost certainly Irish, which could mean any number of things, all of them dreadful.â⬠ââ¬Å"The wind is picking up,â⬠Grace said. ââ¬Å"I shouldn't want you to get chilled.â⬠ââ¬Å"Did he even tell us her name?â⬠ââ¬Å"I don't believe so.â⬠Grace sighed, because direct questions made it difficult to pretend she wasn't a part of this conversation. ââ¬Å"Dear Lord.â⬠The dowager shuddered, and her eyes took on an expression of utter horror. ââ¬Å"She could be Catholic.â⬠ââ¬Å"I have met several Catholics,â⬠Grace said, now that it was clear that her attempts to divert the subject had failed. ââ¬Å"It was strange,â⬠she murmured. ââ¬Å"None had horns.â⬠ââ¬Å"What did you say?â⬠ââ¬Å"Just that I know very little about the Catholic faith,â⬠Grace said lightly. There was a reason she often directed her comments to a window or wall. The dowager made a noise that Grace could not quite identify. It sounded like a sigh, but it was probably more of a snort, because the next words from her mouth were: ââ¬Å"We shall have to get that taken care of.â⬠She leaned forward, pinching the bridge of her nose with her fingers and looking extremely put out. ââ¬Å"I suppose I shall have to contact the archbishop.â⬠ââ¬Å"Is that a problem?â⬠Grace asked. The dowager's head shook with distaste. ââ¬Å"He is a beady little man who will be lording this over me for years.â⬠Grace leaned forward. Was that movement she saw in the distance? ââ¬Å"Heaven knows what sorts of favors he shall demand,â⬠the dowager muttered. ââ¬Å"I suppose I shall have to let him sleep in the State Bedroom, just so he can say he slept on Queen Elizabeth's sheets.â⬠Grace watched as the two men on horseback came into view. ââ¬Å"They are back,â⬠she said, and not for the first time that evening, wondered just what role she was meant to play in this drama. She was not family; the dowager was certainly correct in that. And despite Grace's relatively lofty position within the household, she was not included in matters pertaining to family or title. She did not expect it, and indeed she did not want it. The dowager was at her worst when matters of dynasty arose, and Thomas was at his worst when he had to deal with the dowager. She should excuse herself. It did not matter that Mr. Audley had insisted upon her presence. Grace knew her position, and she knew her place, and it was not in the middle of a family affair. But every time she told herself it was time to go, that she ought to turn from the window and inform the dowager that she would leave her to talk with her grandsons in private, she could not make herself move. She kept hearing ââ¬â no, feeling ââ¬â Mr. Audley's voice. She stays. Did he need her? He might. He knew nothing of the Wyndhams, nothing of their history and the tensions that ran through the house like a vicious, intractable spiderweb. He could not be expected to navigate his new life on his own, at least not right away. Grace shivered, hugging her arms to her chest as she watched the men dismount in the drive. How strange it was to feel needed. Thomas liked to say he needed her, but they both knew that was untrue. He could hire anyone to put up with his grandmother. Thomas needed no one. Nothing. He was marvelously self-contained. Confident and proud, all he really needed was the occasional pinprick to burst the bubble that surrounded him. He knew this, too, which was what saved him from being entirely insufferable. He'd never said as much, but Grace knew it was why they had become friends. She was possibly the only person in Lincolnshire who did not bow and scrape and say only what she thought he wished to hear. But he didn't need her. Grace heard footsteps in the hall and turned, stiffening nervously. She waited for the dowager to order her gone. She even looked at her, raising her brows ever so slightly as if in a dare, but the dowager was staring at the door, determinedly ignoring her. When the men arrived, Thomas walked in first. ââ¬Å"Wyndham,â⬠the dowager said briskly. She never called him anything but his title. He nodded in response. ââ¬Å"I had Mr. Audley's belongings sent up to the blue silk bedroom.â⬠Grace shot a careful look over at the dowager to gauge her reaction. The blue silk bedroom was one of the nicer guest bedchambers, but it was not the largest or most prestigious. It was, however, just down the hall from the dowager. ââ¬Å"Excellent choice,â⬠the dowager replied. ââ¬Å"But I must repeat. Do not refer to him as Mr. Audley in my presence. I don't know these Audleys, and I don't care to know them.â⬠ââ¬Å"I don't know that they would care to know you, either,â⬠commented Mr. Audley, who had entered the room behind Thomas. The dowager lifted a brow, as if to point out her own magnificence. ââ¬Å"Mary Audley is my late mother's sister,â⬠Mr. Audley stated. ââ¬Å"She and her husband, William Audley, took me in at my birth. They raised me as their own and, at my request, gave me their name. I don't care to relinquish it.â⬠He looked coolly at the dowager, as if daring her to comment. She did not, much to Grace's surprise. And then he turned to her, offering her an elegant bow. ââ¬Å"You may refer to me as Mr. Audley if you wish, Miss Eversleigh.â⬠Grace bobbed a curtsy. She was not certain if this was a requirement, since no one had any clue as to his rank, but it seemed only polite. He had bowed, after all. She glanced at the dowager, who was glaring at her, and then at Thomas, who somehow managed to look amused and annoyed at the same time. ââ¬Å"She can't sack you for using his legal name,â⬠Thomas said with his usual hint of impatience. ââ¬Å"And if she does, I shall retire you with a lifelong bequest and have her sent off to some far-flung property.â⬠Mr. Audley looked at Thomas with surprise and approval before turning to Grace and smiling. ââ¬Å"It's tempting,â⬠he murmured. ââ¬Å"How far can she be flung?â⬠ââ¬Å"I am considering adding to our holdings,â⬠Thomas replied. ââ¬Å"The Outer Hebrides are lovely this time of year.â⬠ââ¬Å"You're despicable,â⬠the dowager hissed. ââ¬Å"Why do I keep her on?â⬠Thomas wondered aloud. He walked over to a cabinet and poured himself a drink. ââ¬Å"She is your grandmother,â⬠Grace said, since someone had to be the voice of reason. ââ¬Å"Ah yes, blood.â⬠Thomas sighed. ââ¬Å"I'm told it's thicker than water. Pity.â⬠He looked over at Mr. Audley. ââ¬Å"You'll soon learn.â⬠Grace half expected Mr. Audley to bristle at Thomas's tone of condescension, but his face remained blandly unconcerned. Curious. It seemed the two men had forged some sort of truce. ââ¬Å"And now,â⬠Thomas announced, looking squarely at his grandmother, ââ¬Å"my work here is done. I have returned the prodigal son to your loving bosom, and all is right with the world. Not my world,â⬠he added, ââ¬Å"but someone's world, I'm sure.â⬠ââ¬Å"Not mine,â⬠Mr. Audley said, when no one else seemed inclined to comment. And then he unleashed a smile ââ¬â slow, lazy, and meant to paint himself as the careless rogue he was. ââ¬Å"In case you were interested.â⬠Thomas looked at him, his nose crinkling in an expression of vague indifference. ââ¬Å"I wasn't.â⬠Grace's head bobbed back to Mr. Audley. He was still smiling. She looked to Thomas, waiting for him to say something more. He dipped his head toward her in wry salute, then tossed back his liquor in one shockingly large swallow. ââ¬Å"I am going out.â⬠ââ¬Å"Where?â⬠demanded the dowager. Thomas paused in the doorway. ââ¬Å"I have not yet decided.â⬠Which meant, Grace was sure, anywhere but here.
