The Iroquois occupied the northern and central areas of New York State. Iroquois were cognize to some as the Haudenosaunee The people of the Longhouse. The Iroquois consisted of atomic number 23 groups named the Mohawk (occupied the east), Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca (occupied the westbound part of the state) The Algonquins lived in the southern parts of New York State what is now called Long Island and the Hudson River Valley. The Algonquian groups were the Mahicans, Shinnecock, and the Lenni Lanape The years preceding the 1570 the Iroquois groups were everlastingly fighting amongst themselves and with the Algonquians. Then some time in 1570 the five warring groups came together and formed the Iroquois Confederacy, making it one of the strongest and most powerful groups on the Eastern Coast. all told together the five nations were very strong and each of the five nations had its own governing body called a council that was separated into sets.
