Respond to the Otherness of the Indian Worldview
Whenever you choose to discuss the issue of anformer(a) culture or piety being other than that of yourself, you must startle specialise what it is you are so that you befool a basis of comparison. I, personally, am a white male, born in the United States, who has been brought up in the Christian Church specifically the Disciples of Christ church. I am young, I live in the Midwest, and I am a preacher at a local Texas church. With this cultivation nearly myself laid upon the table, I can at one time have a frame of reference regarding what is and is not other about the Indian worldview.
The Vedic traditions of India have always come crossways to me as less than my own. When I chose to take this class, I did so through the Christian genus Lens and actually told my fiancé on the first day of class that I get to see what we are up against. I have never looked so ripe into the Indian traditions, and I believe that my own arrogance towards the religion has perpetuated stereotypes for people of Indian descent. The idea of a cycle of spiritual rebirth had always seemed almost comical to me for which I am now disappointed in myself for taking that view.
This cycle of Samsara is not so crazy now that I truly look at its heart. While I mute karma, I never understood how you could continually care for your own life if you knew you would be converted again, and again, and again. Now, however, I look at karma and understand more of what the full purpose of it is. I understand that it is the driving, moral edification that has propelled their culture, practically as the Ten Commandments have been the driving force tooshie Christian teachings. I had never looked at karma from a lens that was not headed by scoffing undertones, and when I finally did, I realized that it didnt make Hindus an other in comparison to Christians.
